Heritage Embroidery: A Legacy of the Needle
Rooted in the rigorous, world-renowned traditions of the Royal School of Needlework (RSN), heritage hand embroidery is the preservation of centuries-old technical mastery. Rather than fast, modern crafting, this discipline focuses on precision, historical accuracy, and the meditative beauty of structural stitchery.
The RSN has kept these historic techniques alive since 1872, training generations of master embroiderers. From the regal shimmer of gold to the crisp geometries of monochrome thread, these classic styles form the foundation of our studio’s textile journey.
The Master Disciplines
Jacobean Crewelwork: A rich, textured form of surface embroidery using fine 2-ply wool threads on linen, celebrated for its stylized, sweeping botanical and "Tree of Life" motifs.
Blackwork: A striking, geometric style originating in the Tudor court, utilizing dense geometric filling patterns stitched in black thread on white linen to mimic rich laces and engravings.
Sashiko: A beautiful, historic Japanese running-stitch technique that uses white cotton thread on indigo fabric to create clean, mathematically precise geometric patterns.
Goldwork: The ultimate royal art form, using real metal threads (such as purls, passing, and twist) couched down onto luxury fabrics to create brilliant, light-catching relief work.
Stumpwork: A highly dimensional, raised embroidery technique from the 17th century that uses padded shapes, wired elements, and wrapped slips to lift figures completely off the background.
Whitework: The pinnacle of elegance, using white threads on white fabric to combine delicate surface stitches, pulled threads, and cutwork to form heirloom lace-like patterns.
Appliqué: A classic technique where luxurious fabric shapes are layered onto a ground material and secured with decorative embroidery stitches to create bold, beautiful compositions.
Needlepoint: A precise, structural canvas work discipline where every single intersection of a mesh ground is filled with fine wool or silk stitches to create durable, tapestry-like designs.
